Paislee Adlington, Carson Winkie Selected BHS Students of the Month for August

Paislee Adlington and Carson Winkie have been selected Bridgeport High School Students of the Month for August, 2019.
 
Paislee Adlington is the daughter of Rodney and Allison Adlington. She maintains above a 4.0 GPA and has earned an academic letter and lamp each year while attending BHS. She has served as drum major for the BHS marching Band her junior and senior years. She was happy to accept he award of Grand Champion at the Forest Festival on behalf of the BHS Marching Band in October. She plays 1st trombone in the symphonic band and was a member of the marching band’s frontline her freshman and sophomore years. She has also been a member of the BHS Jazz Ensemble for four years, playing 1st trombone. The jazz ensemble was awarded Honor Jazz Band at the Marshall University Jazz Festival in 2017 She has been a member of the Harrison County All-County Band for three years and has participated in the AB University Honor Band. Paislee is looking forward to representing BHS with the marching band and jazz ensemble at Disney World in December. 
 
Her other activities include National Honor Society, Student council, library assistant and math field day. Paislee was selected by the faculty to attend RYLA and HOBY leadership conferences. She is French Club Publicist and toured Europe with the BHS French Club in June of 2019. She takes dance classes at Rebecca’s Dance Studio. She is a member of Bridgeport United Methodist Church where she participates in the youth and choir programs. She has gone on mission trips to Charleston, SC and assisted with vacation bible schools. Paislee enjoys skiing in the winter at Canaan Valley and tubing at Tygart Lake in the summer. She pans to attend West Virginia University and major in engineering.
 
Carson is the son of Ken and Leslie Winkie of Bridgeport. He is currently a senior attending BHS. He is the student body president and was the president of his class during his freshman, sophomore and junior years while holding a position on the executive board.
 
Carson is an honor student with a current GPA of 4.23 and is an AP scholar with honors and continues to take AP classes. He earned his academic letter his freshman year and academic lamp his sophomore and junior years. He is a member of the National Honor Society.
He is a four-year member of the BHS varsity football team. He lettered each year in football and plays middle linebacker. His offense position is upback. In his junior year, he was elected as a member of the All-County Football Team as Utility Player of the County. He was also selected as All-State honorable mention for defense. Carson has been selected as the Metro News Scholar Athlete of the Week. He has been a member of BHS varsity track team since his freshman year and competed in pole-vault, shot put and discus. He lettered in varsity track his freshman, sophomore and junior years. Carson has also been a three-year member of the Bridgeport Strings Orchestra, playing cello.
 
Carson was nominated and attended several educational and leadership programs while at BHS. They include the West Virginia Governor’s School for Math and Science starting his freshman year. He was a participant of the West Virginia Math Field Day County Competition his freshman, sophomore and junior years of high school and represented Harrison County in the regional WV Math Field Day competition each year. During his junior year, he was selected as a member of the WV State Math Field Day Team.
 
He was selected to attend the American Legion Mountaineer Boys State during the summer o f 2019, sponsored by the Bridgeport American Legion. He was elected governor of West Virginia Boys State among roughly 360 Boys State citizens and was selected to be the recipient of the Samsung Scholarship. He was one of two people from West Virginia selected to attend and to represent West Virginia as a Senator at American Legion Boys Nation during the week of July 19-27, 2019. While at Boys Nation, he was appointed Secretary of Homeland Security and he was also appointed the Party Clerk.
 
Carson was selected for the United States Naval Academy (USNA) Summer STEM Program at the Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. during the summer of 2018. He was also invited to attend the USNA candidate visit weekend in 2019.
 
Carson traveled to the Czech Republic the spring of 2018 and while visiting, he had opportunity to attend a technical school ad experience its high school ad meet new friends along the way. He also traveled to Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Oslo with the Bridgeport High School French Club the summer of 2019.
 
Since his freshman year, he has been a member of the Drug-Free Clubs of America. He has made a promise and commitment to staying drug free and volunteers for random drug testing. Carson was selected his junior year to become a National Peer Helper which is a group which focuses on teaching students how to better peers and help peers whenever needed.
 
Carson is a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Stonewood. As a parishioner, he has assisted in the delivery of items to homebound parishioners and participated in their church string quartet, playing cello for services.
 
He is a member of the DeMolay, an International Male Youth Group emphasizing leadership, high values and morals, from 2009 to present. Carson was Master Councilor (highest position) of the Clarksburg chapter for three six-month terms, leading the chapter in all DeMolay events. In this organization, Carson participants and organizes many community projects with his fellow members; projects including planting trees in the local park, assisting in community festivals/events, visiting and giving gifts to local nursing home residents and ringing bells for the Salvation Army.
 
Carson has volunteered at Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) since his sophomore year. Each year, the local Rotary Club sponsors RYLA for high school freshmen. Carson was selected to attend the program in 9th grade. The program is designed to develop student leadership skills and community responsibility. In 10th and 11th grade, Carson was invited back to assist Rotary members in organizing and planning the event for upcoming freshmen, and to help and share his leadership skills with camp attendees.
 
Carson has volunteered for Wreaths Across America since his sophomore year and was the leader of the BHS schoolwide monetary donation for Wreaths Across America during his sophomore and junior years. He volunteered his sophomore and junior years at he memorial event by placing wreaths to honor each veteran who served our country. He also enjoyed spending time with family members of veterans who are no longer with us and he was honored to get to know some of the living veterans.
 
Carson is the last of five children of the Winkie family to graduate from Bridgeport High School.
