Police Department Advising Residents of Phone Scam Claiming to Warn Individuals of Legal Allegations

Bridgeport Police Chief John Walker warns residents of a phone scam which may give individuals reason to think they are in trouble with the law.

The voice of the caller is automated and at least in some instances is a female voice. She warns that serious legal allegations may result in custody pursuit by local law enforcement and requests payment to take steps in resolving the matter.

If the call is not answered, a voice mail may be left, requesting a call back to discuss the case before legal action is taken. Some received the call from a 646 area code.

Walker urges residents to never provide financial or other personal information over the phone. Always use caution and never hesitate to contact police when receiving a suspicious call.

During a time when identity theft is on the rise, it might be believable that a crime could be committed and attached to an individual’s name.

Particularly vulnerable are older residents and those who are widowed.  Walker said to share information about the scam with individuals who may not have social media or Internet access.
