Registration Open for Little Explorers Study on Birds; Unit Begins Next Week

By Julie Perine on September 06, 2019 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

For 15 years, Anita Jesmer has instructed the Little Explorers group at the Benedum Civic Center, inspiring young minds to learn about science; topics ranging from outer space to prehistoric times to nature seen in everyday life.

Passionate about her teachings, Jesmer utilizes hands-on projects and special visitors to pique her students’ interest and through the years, there have been countless “aha” moments as children delight in making those learning connections.

Once again, Jesmer is hosting a Little Explorers series through Bridgeport Parks and Recreation.

Starting Wed., Sept. 11 and Thurs., Sept. 12, the series will run for four consecutive weeks. Children ages 3 through 8 must be registered before classes start. The fee for either a 6-6:45 p.m. Wednesday or 10-10:45 a.m. Thursday four-week session is $45, which includes all materials for crafts and projects.

“In this unit, we will be studying birds, identifying different bird feathers and characteristics,” Jesmer said. “We will study peacocks and take home real peacock feathers and make peacock necklaces.”

The unit will also include the study of different species of owls, including the barn owl.

“We will dissect owl pellets and make ceramic owl banks,” she said.

Birds not seen often –  the ostrich and bald eagle - will also be featured in the unit.

“We will see a real ostrich egg and the kids will make their own eggs,” Jesmer said. “We’ll learn about he characteristics of the bald eagle and they will be taking their own bald eagle home.”

Sign up for Little Explorers at the Benedum Civic Center Office on West Main Street or by calling 304-842-8240.
