Retail Giant Sears to Close at Meadowbrook Mall

By Julie Perine on December 28, 2016 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

It has been confirmed that the Sears store at Meadowbrook Mall will be closing its doors in early-2017.

Joe Bell, director of corporate communications for the Cafaro Company, said Sears executives have informed mall officials that the store will be closing within the next 90 days.

“This is unfortunate, but it coincides with an ongoing series of store closures Sears has undertaken, in an effort to cut its costs,” he said. “It is not a reflection on the economic health of the mall or the surrounding community, which remains quite strong.  It simply reflects the serious financial problems Sears has been suffering on a national level for quite some time.”

Bell said the Cafaro Company has been aware of Sears’ problems and consequently, its real estate leasing experts have been in discussions with other retailers who may be interested in establishing stores at the current Sears location.

“We look forward to the new and exciting offerings we hope to bring to Meadowbrook Mall in the future,” Bell said.

Meadowbrook Mall Marketing Director Robin Urquhart said the retail giant has been open at Meadowbrook Mall since 1988; for 28 years. The mall itself opened in 1982.

According to a report posted on the WDTV Web site, the Eastpointe K-Mart – which is also owned by Sears – will remain open. Read that report in its entirety HERE.

Editor's Note: This story originally reported that  Sears was an original Meadowbrook Mall store and that the mall opened its doors in 1988. The mall opened in 1982, but Sears did not become a mall tenant until 1988. The error was the fault of the writer, not the mall source. We apologize for the error.
