Senior Football Moms Paint the Town Tribe Red

By Julie Perine on December 04, 2014 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

'Twas high school football playoff season when all through the town were signs wishing the Bridgeport Indians the best of luck.

And we’re talking lots - and lots - of signs.

As is Bridgeport High School tradition, the senior football moms have combined forces to paint hundreds of signs and post them in prominent areas. Included are Wayne Jamison Field, fences and utility poles along Johnson Avenue, the former Hardees building on West Main Street and the Virginia Avenue footbridge.

The sayings and the artwork are clever and the behind-the-scenes work is a true labor of love.

“We have to support our boys,” said Debby Nelson, mother of The Tribe’s Conner Nelson.

Caught in action Wednesday were Nelson, Barb Wilfong, Sally Hartz and Lesa Gray. They were working diligently hanging signs along fencing in front of Johnson Elementary.

The football moms said they have each invested about 10 hours per week in the playoff poster project.

“When last year’s senior moms told me they spent nearly every night together, I couldn’t imagine what they did all that time,” Nelson said.
Now she knows.

Although much of that time is spent working with the many rolls of paper and jars of paint purchased, it’s about a lot more than sign making. While the football team is bonding, so are their moms, making and nurturing lasting friendships.

And the artwork is being noticed – yes, even by their senior high school football playing sons. The consensus is that the boys like what they – and members of their community – are seeing.

The moms have been making signs during the entire football season, but they have really vamped it up during playoffs. In addition to that activity, they have worked together to organize weekly spaghetti dinners for the team.

The following poem can be read while driving along Johnson Avenue in front of Johnson Elementary School. It was written by Debby Nelson:

'Twas the week of state playoffs
And up and down the street
Was a question of upmost importance
With everyone you meet.

Could they do it again,
Two times in two years?
Sure they can! Yes they can,
Why all the fears?

They've played their best
And done all they can
To make it to the Island
For another stand.

Their offense is stellar
The defense second to none
A kicker and punter that more than
Get the job done

So let's load up the buses
and pack up the team
Look out Frankfort,
BRIDGEPORTS LIVIN’ A DREAM.
