Series of Auto Break-Ins Occur Overnight in Bridgeport; Police Caution Residents to be on Alert and Keep Vehicles Locked

Bridgeport Police advise that overnight between Friday and Saturday there were a series of vehicle break-ins. The incidents were similar to a chain of break-ins which took place last year and again just a couple weeks ago as all of the vehicles broken into were unlocked. There were specific areas targeted.

“Sometime over the night someone was going around the Lawman Avenue, Willis Avenue and Mesa Drive area – and Crystal Ridge – and getting into unlocked vehicles, rummaging through glove boxes and consoles,” Lt. Mike Lemley said. “So far, we’ve had a little bit of money come up missing and one wallet that we know of that for sure were missing out of cars.”

Among victims was the Jones family who reside on Willis Avenue. The vehicle was unlocked, which is very out of the ordinary, Juli Jones said. Always adamant about locking their vehicles, they inadvertently forgot, getting in late at night. It only takes one time.
“So they got in and took my entire wallet/purse. I lost all of my stuff,” she said.

In addition to the missing items, it was otherwise obvious that someone had been in the vehicle as items were taken out of the console and strung throughout the truck, Jones said.

Upon the discovery, the family filed a report Saturday morning, after which members of Bridgeport Police arrived and dusted all three of the family’s vehicles - the other two which had been locked - for prints.

“While they were here, multiple calls came in for a bunch of other areas that got hit,” Jones said.

Lemley advises residents to be on alert and to report anyone suspicious seen in neighborhoods late at night.

“Please call 911 and let us know, so we can come check it out and please remember to lock your vehicles.”
