Seven Members of Indian Volleyball Squad Capture All-County Honors; Curry Selected Coach of Year

Five members of the Lady Indian Volleyball Team have been named All-County and Coach Ali Curry has been selected Coach of the Year.

Players receiving the honor were seniors Sydney Leatherman, Emily Griffith, Morgan Signorelli and Caroline Lloyd, as well as junior Abby Strait. Named to the second team were senior Lexie Sczerba and junior Christina White.

“I absolutely agree with those selections. The girls are very deserving,” Curry said. “We dressed 13, but it was really those seven girls who got the most playing time.”

With a record of 27-8-5, a county championship, sectional and regional wins, Curry said the team had a very good season.

“We were blessed with a fantastic group of girls who totally bought in to what our goals were for the season and put in the work 100 percent so we were really pleased,” she said.

Although they made it to the state tournament, the Lady Indians fell to Herbert Hoover after losing three straight sets. That was a disappointment, but advancing to WVSSAC Class AA action was beneficial for the girls, Curry said.

“If you don’t make it to the state tournament, a lot of times the girls don’t get looked at for honors – All-State and Conference wise,” she said. “I’m grateful our girls were willing to put in the work. We told them at the end of last year’s season and at the beginning of this year that if they were willing to put in 100 percent of the work, they would benefit and their team would benefit. I think they realized once they got to the state tournament that we weren’t just blowing smoke.”

Grant Burton served as Curry’s assistant coach.

Not to minimize her appreciation for her own honor, Curry made it very clear that she was more interested in her players’ recognition than her own.

“I am grateful – and it is awesome that other coaches voted for me and I was chosen, but it’s not about me,” she said. “It’s about them.”
