Held last Saturday night at Bridgeport Conference Center, Simpson Elementary School’s Playground Ball was a success, said Teresa Lunsford, president of the school’s Parent Teacher Association.

“The PTA was able to raise a few thousand dollars to help with the cost of purchasing/installing a pavilion on the premises,” she said.

About 130 individuals attended the ball, which featured family-friendly music and dancing and a meal prepared by the Bridgeport Conference Center staff. Funds were also raised through prize drawings for about 20 baskets filled with items and gift cards donated by area businesses.

The PTA now focuses on its annual Fall Festival. Scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Bridgeport High School gymnasium, this year’s event features an old-fashioned carnival theme. Including duck pond, fishing booth - and the popular cake walk and toilet paper toss – activities and games will run from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m.

During the last couple of years, several thousand dollars has been raised through the Fall Festival; those funds earmarked for playground upgrades.

Although the fall festival is important with regard to fundraising, it’s also a tradition to which Simpson Elementary students and other area kids look forward on an annual basis, PTA officers said.
