Simpson Elementary School Holding Winter Gear Drive for Homeless

Baby it’s cold outside! Or at least it’s getting that way.  For the homeless in Harrison County, this can be a devastating time of year, as they transition to cold weather with limited resources.  Simpson Elementary is trying to help them out by collecting winter gear of all kinds.

“The blanket drive is something I have done on a much smaller scale through church,” said organizer Taylor Thomas.  “We decided to try it at the school to help the homeless in our area better prepare for the upcoming harsh weather.”

The drive is not limited to blankets, but has been expanded to included coats, gloves, scarves and hats as well.

Thomas said the general public is encouraged to participate in the drive as well.

“We hope the students understand the impact that these donations can make.  Having adults participate is a great way to show kids that everyone can make a difference.  I think it is important for them to know homelessness does exist in our area and that small steps on the part of many can be a tremendous blessing in someone else’s life,” said Thomas.

Winter gear and blankets will be collected at Simpson Elementary School throughout the month of October and donations will be given to organizations that deal directly with the local homeless population.
