Simpson Elementary's Annual Graduation Celebration to take place Wednesday

By Chris Johnson on June 02, 2020 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Every year Simpson Elementary School sends off its fifth-grade students in as grand a fashion as possible.

The desire to do so may be a little stronger for the Class of 2020 who have been out of school since mid-March because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Wednesday, Simpson’s yearly graduation celebration will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. It might have a slightly different look to it, but fifth-grade teachers Meghan Flesher, Katie Jedrosko and Julie Clayton as well as the rest of the school staff and the PTA are poised to make it a special event for the students.

“It’s exciting just as a commencement and just to finalize the year because we didn’t get to do that,” Flesher said. “This one definitely feels a little more special and we want to make it a little over the top while still following the social distancing guidelines and protocol.

“We plan to hand out the diplomas, kind of like a graduation ceremony. It’s going to be set up as a drive-by and there will be a ‘Card My Yard’ where parents can get out and take pictures. And we have a few surprises up our sleeves.”

As exiting as an event that is expected to be for the kids, the teachers will be equally thrilled to just see their students.

“This will be the first time seeing them since March 13,” Flesher said. “We’re super excited to see them.”
