Sixty and Counting: Public Providing Name Suggestions for Indoor Sports and Recreation Complex; Decision to be Made in January

At the Dec. 9 Bridgeport City Council work session, Mayor Andy Lang announced that to date there had been no hiccups on the construction of the Indoor Sports and Recreation Complex – that footers and walls have been going up and organized planning meetings were ongoing.

City Manager Randy Wetmore also shared that several name suggestions had been made by members of the community and that he hoped a name could be decided upon in very early 2020.

Community Development Director Andrea Kerr said she is pleased with the feedback received to date.

“We received approximately 60 suggestions,” she said. “We are glad the participation was so high. The community cares and they also want us to select a name everyone can be proud of.”

Some name suggestions were creative and viable, Kerr said.

“We expected a variety and for everything to span across the board,” she said. “SFM (Sports Facilities Management, consulting firm for facility project) threw a couple names in the hat, too. Council and administration will also brainstorm ideas and provide some suggestions. After that, Council will officially decide upon a name. That should take place by mid-January.”

Prior to Council’s 7 p.m. Jan. 13 meeting, the governing body will gather in a one-hour work session; devoting part of that time to name consideration. After reading through the ideas, each Council member, Lang and Wetmore will make their top picks and the process will continue, likely at a special meeting.

It’s not too late to provide a suggestion. Ideas will be gathered through the end of 2019.
