Slow-Moving Storm System Heading Toward Harrison County; Weekend Forecast is Rain and More Rain

Although there’s no threat of severe weather – like the winds and hail that surrounding areas experienced Thursday evening – there are some potential weather woes expected for this weekend.

Director of Bridgeport Emergency Services Laura Pysz said, according to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms are expected Saturday afternoon through the remainder of the weekend. The only real concern, Pysz said, is potential flooding. But for Bridgeport and immediately surrounding areas, that’s not even likely, she said.

“Even with all the rain we got Thursday night, it’s had time to subside so depending on how heavy the rain comes down tomorrow, there might be localized flooding, but I expect our area should be fine,” she said.

WDTV News Channel 5 Meteorologist Jill Szwed explained approaching weather as a slow-moving storm system headed to the Harrison County area, including Bridgeport, sometime Saturday afternoon and continuing into Monday morning.

“Saturday night and much of Sunday, rain will be heavy at times with isolated thunderstorms, however they are of the garden variety – non-severe storms,” she said.

Szwed also said the biggest concern with the heavy rain – especially hitting the same spots across West Virginia time after time – is potential localized flooding across the region.

“We’ll be picking up an inch plus of rain once it starts tomorrow, through Monday morning,” she said. “But severe threat is very low.”

The threat for local severe weather was also low Thursday evening when isolated storms started popping up.

“These storms definitely got intense across Taylor County and Randolph County. The threat of tornados was low, with wind and hail the primary concern,” she said. “Taylor County was the hardest hit area – especially in Grafton – and parts of Randolph County got quarter-size hail – pushing golf ball-size – which meets the severe weather criteria.”
