Sophia Gorby and Corey Skidmore Named Students of the Month for November

Sophia Gorby and Corey Skidmore have been named Bridgeport High School Students of the Month for November.
 
Sopia Gorby is the daughter of Dr. Bruce Gorby and Susie Watson. She has been influential on Student Council throughout high school, serving on her class board as an underclassman, as student body treasurer her junior year and currently as student body vice president. Sophia has also been inducted into the National Honor Society, serving as the corresponding secretary. She has also been inducted into the French Honor Society. This year, Sophia was elected as a senior class homecoming princess.
 
She is a four-year member of the varsity tennis team. In the upcoming season, she will be co-captain of the team. Sophia holds a state title, winning Class AA fourth line singles in 2019. She was a varsity cheerleader for the first three years of high school, serving on the competitive team all three years. Last year, the team won a regional championship and the Big 10 Conference championship. This year, she is a member of the BHS Swim Team. She made her high school theater debut in the senior class production of “Elf the Musical,” in which she was a member of the ensemble.
 
Sophia has attended Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership camps, as well as Camp Horseshoe in Tucker County. Since then, she has attended many weekend retreats and returned to the camp as a counselor. Last summer, Sophia volunteered in Bali, Indonesia through Plan My Gap Year. She worked on a wildlife center, where she helped feed animals, clean their habitats and create enrichment toys. The service also included a mangrove conservation project, a turtle conservation project and a daily beach clean.
 
In her free time, Sophia enjoys spending time with her pup, Oliver, and playing with her niece Willow Rose. Sophia loves Bridgeport High School and cheering on the Indians. On Friday nights, you can find her in the front of the student section.
 
She plans to attend Clemson University in the fall and study biochemistry. Sophia hopes to pursue a career in the medical field.
 
Corey Skidmore is the son of Maria and the late Heath Skidmore. He is a member of the varsity basketball team and has been playing organized basketball for the past 13 years. He was a member of the 2018 Class AA regional championship team and the 2019 sectional championship team.
 
Corey has excelled in academics at BHS and has been a member of the superior and perfect honor roll throughout his high school career. He is extremely involved in the media program as well as the Drug-Free Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, French Club, Conservation Club and Operation Christmas Child. He plans to participate in Shop for Tots this winter. He also volunteers his time in the spring to the baseball team, serving as the team’s statistician.
 
Corey is part owner of the local small business, “West Virginia Fly Guys,” selling handmade flies to customers all over the world.
Upon graduation, Corey plans to attend Fairmont State in the fall to study national security, intelligence and political science.
