Three-Vehicle Accident on Johnson Avenue Slows Traffic; Earlier Accident Occurs After Driver Falls Asleep at Wheel

Early this afternoon, Bridgeport Fire, EMS and Police were dispatched to the scene of a vehicle accident on Johnson Avenue at the intersection of Barnett Run Road. What was initially thought to be a two-vehicle accident actually involved three vehicles, said Bridgeport Police Officer M.J. Hammond.

“We had a white in color Chevy Cobalt traveling southbound on Meadowbrook Road, turning left onto Barnett Run Road which failed to yield at an intersection. Then we had a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction – a silver in color Kia Spectra – which struck the Cobalt and as a result of the collision, both vehicles collided with a black in color Range Rover.”

The accident took place at 1:15 p.m. Hammond said it is fortunate that the accident was not more severe, but that it did back traffic up for several minutes. Bridgeport Law Enforcement received assistance from the West Virginia State Police, who were first on the scene. Bridgeport Fire/Emergency Services personnel helped with traffic control.

There were no hospital transports or even minor injuries. Two of the three vehicles were towed by Dan Riggs Towing. The driver of the Cobalt, who was at fault for the collision, is from Flemington, Hammond said. The other two drivers are from West Union and North Carolina.

The accident was not the first which Bridgeport units responded to today. Just before 10 a.m., Bridgeport Fire and Police departments responded to an accident on Lodgeville Road, near the entrance to Neel’s Fence Company (Gabriel Drive).

“It was dispatched originally as a two-vehicle accident with injuries, but it was just one vehicle, a Chrysler PT Cruiser,” Hammond said. “A lady who had just worked midnight shift at Kroger had fallen asleep at the wheel and drifted over. Another car swerved to miss it.”

The driver of the PT Cruiser did sideswipe a large metal sign. There was no damage to the sign and minor damage to the vehicle.

“It took off her mirror and dented the car up,” Hammond said.
