Today's Homecoming Parade Only to be Postponed in the Event of Heavy Rain

Today's 6 p.m. Bridgeport High School Homecoming Parade will kick off a series of Homecoming festivities. Organizers are hoping that today's spotty showers clear for tonight's festivities. The parade will take place unless rains are heavy. A decision will not be made until close to 5 p.m. In the event the parade is postponed, it will take place tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 1.

Featuring dozens of units - from class floats and Homecoming court members - to the BHS Marching Band and area athletic teams - The procession will proceed up Philadelphia Avenue onto Johnson Avenue and end at BHS. The parade is organized each year by the BHS Key Club.

As they did last year, members of the Key Club will collect canned food items for Shepherd’s Corner. In addition to collecting items along the parade route, they will be stationed at the parking lot next to Kindermusik on Philadelphia Avenue/Main Street, Bridgeport Manor, Bridgeport Church of Christ and Bridgeport United Methodist Church. BHS students are also welcome to bring items to school to benefit the food drive, said Key Club Sponsor Charlene Keener. Last year’s collection was successful with more than 150 cans collected, she said.

The parade will feature all units from last year’s event, plus a few more, Keener said.

“We’ll have floats from the different Bridgeport High School classes and, of course, the football team and cheerleaders. We also have last year’s homecoming queen (Hannah Fetty) and all of this year’s freshman, sophomore and junior princesses and the eight seniors vying for homecoming queen,” she said. “This year, we also have the Bridgeport Middle School cheerleaders and state championship baseball teams, the BHS Alumni Band, senior football moms and a Little Miss Indian float with last year’s winners and this year’s candidates. I think it’s going to be a fun time.”

Homecoming attendants and their respective escorts are as follows: Freshmen: Juliet Hart (Tyler Hardesty) and Hannah Walker (Brent Sinsel); Sophomores Jenna Love (John Merica) and Ashton Miller (Brady Hillegas); Juniors Taylor Abraham (Aaron Walton) and Quinn Stalnaker (D.J. Pinder) and Seniors Leigh Hornor (Marco Oliverio), Matteah Kittle (Jacob Love), Olivia Leadman (Andrew Funk), Maggie Lohmann (Cordell Hutchison), Hannah Stozenfelz (Elijah Drummond), Shae Tomasik (Haden Miller), Emily Trickett (Luke Gorrell) and Marissa Young (Preston Zirkle). Minor court members are Collins Randolph and Paxton Pomeroy.

Several units will be tossing candy to kids along the parade route, so children should bring bags, buckets or baskets to collect their treats.

Parade units have each been assigned a gathering place between Kindermusik and Simpson Elementary School and are asked to be in place between 5 and 5:30 p.m.
