UHC Announces Three New Medical Staff Members

WVU Medicine United Hospital Center is pleased to announce the three newest members to its medical staff.
 
Devan N. Makati, MD, FASN, earned his medical degree from the University of Medical and Health Sciences in Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis.  He completed both his internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship at West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown. 
 
In addition to having written extensively for publications and making numerous presentations concerning his field of expertise, Dr. Makati also served as a Lance Corporal in the 1st Battalion/24th Marines Headquarters and Support Company 4th Marine division in the United States Marine Corps., as well as MIANG F Co. 425th long range surveillance. 
 
He is a member of the American College of Physicians, Association of American Medical Colleges, American Society of Nephrology, National Kidney Foundation, American Thoracic Society, and Special Operation Medical Association.

James “Lewis” Akers, DO, is a native of Ripley and earned his medical degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg. He completed both his internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship at West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown.
 
He has extensive research and laboratory experience, as well as numerous honors and awards for his accomplishments, which includes being named “Best Teaching Intern”. He is a member of the American Society of Nephrology, American College of Physicians, and American Medical Association.

Yousef Abdel-Aziz, MD, MPH, received his medical degree from Hashemite University, in Jordan.  He also earned a Master of Public Health Administration from the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio.
 
Dr.  Abdel-Aziz began his preliminary year of internal medicine at Marshall University, at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine in Huntington, WV.  He completed his residency in internal medicine from the University of Toledo, while there he was named chief medical resident and was honored with an Alpha-Omega-Alpha (A.O.A.) Membership.  A.O.A. is the national medical honor society for the top 1% of U.S. Physicians.  
 
His fellowship training was completed at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN. 
 
Graduating at the top of his medical school class, he has also received numerous accolades throughout his medical education and training.  Dr. Abdel-Aziz is board certified in internal medicine and board eligible in gastroenterology. 
 
Dr. Abdel-Aziz helped to organize the breaking of the Guinness World Record for the most people to sign up as organ donors in eight hours, which resulted in 3,540 donors.  In his spare time, he enjoys spending it with family and friends, as well as reading, walking, soccer, and listening to music.
