UHC Receives Donation from LightHouse of Hope and Laurel Lanes

Women from the Clarksburg-Harrison Regional Housing Authority’s Laurel Lanes community in partnership with LightHouse of Hope Ministries, recently donated handmade nursing and support pillows to United Hospital Center obstetrics.

LightHouse of Hope Ministries is an organization that seeks to unite people across diverse segments of Clarksburg to use their gifts and abilities to transform lives and families through health and safety, economic development, spiritual development and most importantly education.  “We are all about shining the light of hope to people,” said Tressa Shaw, Founder and Director of LightHouse of Hope Ministries.  “The handmade nursing and support pillows are a way for our members to give back and spread hope to individuals that may need it.”

The objective is to advance urban transformation and one way of doing that is to teach skills such as sewing.  “Initially the women at Laurel Lanes all wanted to sew and make various items for themselves,” said Gwen Cornman, Outreach Coordinator for LightHouse of Hope Ministries.  “Now all they want to do is make things for others and give back to the community.”

These handmade nursing pillows were developed to help moms achieve breastfeeding goals, and its circular shape provides a comfortable position for both mom and baby during feeding. The pillow can also be used to improve crawling and motor skills in infants.

“UHC is fortunate to have such selfless individuals in our community as Laurel Lanes and LightHouse of Hope Ministries,” said Misty Harlow, RN, nurse manager.  “The generous donation of pillows will certainly help to increase breastfeeding rates, which brings health benefits to both mother and child.”

Shaw concluded that LightHouse of Hope Ministries restores one life at a time, in order to restore one family at a time, which then brings positive change to an entire city.  If you would like to volunteer for LightHouse of Hope Ministries, please call 304-629-9471
