UPDATE: Bridgeport Police Officer Scott Toothman has reported additional information relating to a weekend hit-and-run accident.

"I located the driver and cited him for leaving the scene," he said.

Contrary to rumors, the vehicle was not stolen, Toothman said.

Original story posted early Saturday morning:

Around midnight, Bridgeport Police were alerted to an automobile accident on Philadelphia Avenue, just below the Bridgeport Manor and directly in front of Chic Nail.

Upon arrival at the scene, police discovered a newer model Audi which struck a city light pole and business sign. The driver of the Audi had fled the scene.

It appeared that the vehicle had turned onto Philadelphia Avenue off Main Street and went off road in front of Chic Nail before making impact.

“It looked like he jumped the curb, then struck the pole. That’s all we can really tell,” said Officer Scott Toothman. “We’re not sure how fast. There weren’t a lot of skid marks.”

In searching the vehicle, police recovered an ID and the owner of the vehicle, who was not the driver, was called to Bridgeport Police station.

Both the light pole and sign were shattered and the cement foundation of the light pole was dislodged. Police alerted the city’s public works department to check the scene for potential safety hazards. The car was towed from the scene. The matter continues to be under investigation by Bridgeport PD.
