Video: City Featured in Economic Development Film; Municipal League Production Focus on Home Rule

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on February 03, 2019 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

This video by the West Virginia Municipal League shows what they believe to be the positive impact that Home Rule has had on the state and on several cities throughout the state. Featured prominently in the 3-minute plus segment is Bridgeport.

As many know, Bridgeport was among the first cities in the state to utilize Home Rule in a pilot program created by the West Virginia Legislature. Home Rule, as the video explains, allows local jurisdictions to exercise control in areas that may benefit them with rules different from those allowed in other parts of the state.

The video release comes out at the time the Legislature is voting to make Home Rule permanent as opposed to a pilot project. Recently, City Manager Kim Haws said more than two dozen cities utilize Home Rule.

Former Mayor and current City Council member Robert “Bob” Greer has been the city’s point person on Home Rule since it went into place years ago. On Friday, Greer reported on social media that the bill to make Home Rule permanent has cleared the Senate.

Regardless of your position on the Home Rule, take a few minutes to watch the video. It paints the city, as well as Weirton and Charleston, in a positive light with efforts as a result of Home Rule. Interviews with Bridgeport’s Richard Forren and city businessman Chad Riley are included.
