The School of Nursing at West Virginia Wesleyan College celebrated the opening of the Emergency Room Simulation Lab on October 7 with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The School of Nursing, housed in Middleton Hall, has received major renovations in several classrooms. This lab, along with the Howard D. Naylor ’39 and Audrey Holden Naylor ’41 Simulation Lab, offers students access to real world experiences.

 

Dr. Susan Leight, director of the school and professor of nursing, shared with the audience of Board of Trustees, administration alumni, faculty, staff, and students that the second floor, now known as Middleton Central, replicates a working hospital with a fully functional emergency department, three private patient rooms, two labor and delivery suites, and centralized nursing stations with operational medication carts and computer terminals to access electronic health records. All bedside headwall units and health assessment equipment are hospital grade and fully functional. 

 

Currently, the School has two adult male high fidelity simulators, two pregnant female simulators, two pediatric simulators, and two Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training simulators along with multiple task trainers.

 

In addition to serving BSN and MSN programs, the School has training partnerships with Holbrook on the Hill Skilled Nursing facility in Buckhannon, Upshur County Emergency Medical Services, West Virginia Junior College LPN Program, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Bank’s District Volunteer Fire Department, the West Virginia Perinatal Partnership, and the West Virginia School for Osteopathic Medicine.
