The 38th Annual West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival is this coming next weekend, kicking off with the 12 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2 coronation of Regina Maria XXXVII Bryanna DeFazio.

WVIHF Office Assistant Lydia Baldini shared how DeFazio and her court were chosen.

“All court members are chosen by a selection committee, as is the queen; however, each candidate for queen undergoes an interview process,” she said.

Several from Bridgeport are part of this year's royalty including Maid of Honor Rachel Nicole Reppert. She is a junior at Bridgeport High School, where she is a member of the BHS Dance Ensemble, Drug-Free Clubs of America and Student Council Executive Board. She is the daughter of Clifton and Maria Reppert and the granddaughter of Joan Secreta LeJeune and the late Stephen and Mary Reppert. Rachel’s Italian ancestry is traced to San Giovanni in Fiore, Italy.

This isn’t Rachel's first WVIHF coronation. When she was about seven years old, she served on the minor court.

“I remember picking out my dress for the gala and talking with my family about my Italian heritage – kind of getting the background of it,” she said.

It means a great deal to Reppert to come back nearly 10 years later as maid of honor.

“It does mean a lot because they pick you to do it and I am really proud of my Italian heritage – my ancestors coming here and giving up everything they had. I’m just really glad that they celebrate that nationality because it’s a big part of West Virginia,” she said. “And I’m really glad to be able to represent it.”

Reppert looks forward to the entire WVIHF weekend, but is particularly excited about the grand parade and the coronation.

“I love the parade because you see everybody’s families coming together and sitting together on the curb and it’s the same people who always come back – the same families,” she said. “And the coronation is a really big deal. I remember how exciting it was to walk out and everyone clap for you. It’s kind of like everyone is there for you.”

Rachel looks forward to seeing Bryanna DeFazio crowned Regina Maria XXXVII.

“I’m really close with the queen. She was my dance teacher for two years,” she said. “She deserves this a lot and I’m really excited to see her crowned.”
