Off the Shelf: A look at Some May Programs for Teens and Kids with One Unique and Very Tiny Visitor

By Sharon Saye on May 02, 2018 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Despite our projected renovations, some programming is continuing particularly for children and teens. May has a very unusual program with the visit on Saturday, May 12 at 1 p.m. of Stormy the mini-horse.

This program is geared towards all children between the ages of four and 12 and will take place indoors. Mini Wings is a program that focuses on spreading awareness of the benefits of equine-assisted activities and therapies in the community through the use of miniature horses.  Stormy, a four-year-old black and white mini-horse, regularly visits WVU Children’s Medicine, area nursing homes and public libraries.

Books and Barks continues Saturday, May 5 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Mountaineer Therapy Dogs will be present and eager to have children read stories aloud to them. Registration is required by calling the library.

Pizza and Pages is a monthly book discussion group for children between the ages of eight and twelve.  This month’s selection is “Hoot” by Carl Hiaasen; its hero, Roy, spots a strange running boy and is determined to solve this mystery that leads him to potty-trained alligators, a fake-fart champion, some burrowing owls, a renegade eco-avenger and several extremely poisonous snakes with unnaturally sparkling tails.  Children are welcome to borrow a copy of the book from Amy at the library.  The discussion occurs on May 10 at 6 p.m.

Regular weekly story hour continues on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. for children under the age of three.  During the renovations, the program will be held in the children’s area.

Teens will continue to meet on Mondays at 3 p.m.  On May 7 they will play Rummikub, on May 14, Dungeon and on May 21,, they will be discussing “How It Went Down” by Kekla Magoon about the death of sixteen-year-old Tariq Johnson where no two accounts of the events line up.  Copies can be obtained by speaking to Sarah.
