Off the Shelf: Books from New Netflix Romance Series Available at Library as New Hours to Begin Jan. 25

Netflix debuted a romance series based on the books of Julia Quinn at Christmas.  It turned out to be one of their most popular series.  For those who enjoyed the series, but want to know more about the Bridgertons, there are 9 books in the series.

The Bridgertons are an aristocratic family in Regency England.  There are eight children, and each book is about their romantic adventures.  The first book, “The Duke and I” focuses on Daphne Bridgerton, the eldest daughter, who is enjoying a season of balls and activities in London.  She is charming and bright and very friendly.  And that is the problem, all the available suitors think of her as that sweet Daphne and view her as a friend and not as a future wife.

Simon Basset is an unmarried Duke who has just returned from years of traveling abroad.  Friends with Daphne’s brother, Simon and Daphne hit on a scheme.  They will pretend to be courting thus protecting him from all the scheming mothers and making her look like more of a prize to the gentlemen.

As any reader of romance novels can tell you, this leads to problems when both Simon and Daphne start to get emotionally involved.  And for Simon whose horrid childhood has left him with an aversion to marriage, his developing passion for Daphne is not on his schedule.  So, conflict and suffering, emotional distress and happiness are all tied up in a light and romantic book.

The other books in the Bridgerton series are: “The Viscount Who Loved Me,” “An Offer from a Gentlemen,” “Romancing Mister Bridgerton,” “To Sir Philip, With Love,” “When He Was Wicked,” “It’s in His Kiss,” “On the Way to the Wedding,” and “The Bridgertons: Happy Ever After.”

The City of Bridgeport is resuming its hours of operation.
