Off the Shelf: Escape the Heat with the Latest Magazines at the Library

By Sharon Saye on June 27, 2018 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

One of the effects of hot weather is an increasing readership of our magazine and newspaper collections.  It is nice and relaxing to enjoy the air conditioning while also enjoying the Wall Street Journal or the latest issue of Time Magazine.

The library has subscriptions to around 100 magazines and newspapers.  The newspapers range from the Morgantown, Charleston and Clarksburg daily issues to the Sunday issues of the New York Times and the weekly edition of The State Journal.

The magazines represent a wide variety of interests.  The newest issues are placed on display racks in the front of the library for easy use and the back issues are kept behind on shelves.  Older issues of magazines can be checked out for two weeks.

Our magazines range from the very popular such as People, Time, Business Week, Sports Illustrated, Oprah, Entertainment Weekly, etc.  to the specialized such as Consumer Reports, Family Handyman, Fine Homebuilding, Astronomy, Goldenseal, and This Old House.

There are cooking magazines such as Taste of Home, Cooking Light, Food Network and Everyday with Rachel Ray.  Craft enthusiasts can pick from American Patchwork and Quilting, Martha Stewart Living, McCall’s Quilting, Threads and Woman’s Day.  Pet lovers can read Dogster or Catster.

History buffs can try American History, Archaeology, Goldenseal, Saturday Evening Post, Smithsonian and Wonderful West Virginia while those fascinated by current events can read Maclean’s, Rolling Stone, Utne Reader, Vanity Fair, Nation, National Review, New York, Atlantic, and Fortune.

The library also subscribes to 90 magazines in digital form.  Some of the titles duplicate those we already subscribe to in physical form, but others are different.  Some of the titles include Guideposts, The Economist, Us, Mother Jones, Apple, Newsweek, Mother Jones, Allrecipes, Backpacker, Diabetic Living and Star.

To check these magazines out, please go to our website.  You will need your library card number; instructions are available on the website.  Once these magazines are downloaded to your computer or device, they are yours to keep or delete.  Some back issues are available.

Even if you are not concerned with the cost of magazine subscriptions, you probably are daunted by how rapidly magazines stack up.  Visiting your library or its online collections can save you money, time and space.
