Off the Shelf: How to Read what Library Staffs Read

By Sharon Saye on September 01, 2021 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

LibraryReads is the monthly nationwide library staff picks list for adult fiction and non-fiction.

Their goal is to help connect readers to as many books as possible while drawing upon the incredible power that public library staff have in building word-of-mouth for new books.  Rather than picking “the best” of anything, LibraryReads represents collective favorites – the books library staff loved reading and cannot wait to share.

The lists are released in the middle of the previous months that the books are published.  This means that these selections are published throughout the month; so, please do not expect every book to be available at the library immediately.  Also, the lists are archived on their website and make a great place to browse when you are looking for what to read next.

The top book recommended in September is “Under the Whispering Door” by TJ Klune, the author of last fall’s big hit, “The House on the Cerulean Sea.”  This book promises to be just as quirky and lovely as Wallace dies from a heart attack and finds himself at Charon’s Crossing Tea and Treats run by Hugo the Ferryman who helps people cross over to death.  But Wallace is not ready.

“Fuzz” by Mary Roach is the sole non-fiction entry in a book the reviewer describes “chronicles the push and pull of the human/wildlife struggle for co-existence.”

“The Charm Offensive” by Alison Cochrun is a romance about a reality show and “The Love Hypothesis” by Ali Hazelwood involves two scientists in what they think is a fake-date.

Anthony Doerr’s “Cloud Cuckoo Land” is one of the most anticipated books of the fall.  The reviewer gives this tidbit about it; “Much of the beauty of this novel is in watching the pieces slowly come together to tell an eternal story that is both heartbreaking and hopeful.”

“Harlem Shuffle” by Colson Whitehead, “The Last House on Needless Street” by Catriona Ward, “The Man Who Died Twice” by Richard Osman, “Never Saw Me Coming” by Vera Kurian, and “No Gods, No Monsters” by Cadwell Turnbull round out the top ten selections for September.
