Off the Shelf: Kicking Off Fall with a Busy October at the Bridgeport Public Library

By Sharon Saye on October 05, 2016 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

October is a busy month at the library; we have a full slate of programs leaving hardly a day free.  It kicked off with a visit from the therapy dogs in “Books and Barks” last Saturday from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.  This program enables children to read out loud to therapy dogs; it gives shy children or those with reading difficulties a chance to practice reading to a supportive and friendly dog.  This program is held the first Saturday of every month, and since the time is limited, please register your child if you wish to participate.

“Tea & Talk” returns on Mondays at 1 p.m.  This program encourages participants to watch the latest episode on PBS of the series, “Poldark,” and discuss it over tea with other fans.  “Poldark” is based on the multi-book series by Winston Graham about a young man back to England from the American Revolutionary War whose love marries another and whose family lands and business are at risk.

Book groups continue to meet beginning with Chapter Chat on October 5 at 12 p.m.; the selection this month is “Dead Wake” by Erik Larson about the last voyage of the Lusitania.  Larson will be one of the authors at the 2015 West Virginia Book Festival in Charleston from October 28 -29.  Book Talk meets on Wednesday, October 19 at 4 p.m.; the book is “After You” by JoJo  Moyes, the sequel to “Me before You.”

The Silver Screeners is a program to highlight movies that never arrived in theaters in our area.  It is scheduled for Friday, October 14 and the movie is “Genius” starring Colin Firth, a chronicle of editor, Max Perkin’s time at Scribner where he oversaw works by Thomas Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway and F.  Scott Fitzgerald.

A Halloween Costume Show for pets will be held at 6 p.m. on October 25; bring your pet in their Halloween Costume and win a prize.

Children programs continue with Story Time held every Friday at 10:30 a.m. as well as this week’s Story Laboratory: Fantastic Bats held on Thursday at 6 p.m.  Registration is required for this program.

Pizza and Pages, the book group for children will be reading “Nightmare at the Book Fair” by Dan Gutman and talking about it on October 13 at 6 p.m.  Registration is also required so that we know how much pizza to purchase.

Teen Read Week occurs from October 10 through the 15 with a program on Monday, Teen Read-A-Thon; throughout the week teens have a chance to vote in YALSA’s Teens’ Top Ten.  We also encourage adults to read a young adult book during the week.

Teens regularly meet on Monday nights.  On October 3, teens discussed Libba Bray’s “The Diviners,” on October 17 they watch the shark adventure, “The Shallows,” and on October 24, they play “Dungeon.”

A full schedule of the library’s events is available on the City of Bridgeport’s webpage as well as on handouts that you can pick up at both circulations desks.  And don’t forget, the annual Fall Book Sale takes place next week during the library’s regular hours.
