Off the Shelf: Library Adapting to New Business Ways as Summer Hours, Other Service Information Listed

By Sharon Saye on June 10, 2020 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The library resumed services on June 1 with contactless pickups.  So far, we have put out over 150 bags of books and materials on a table in the front foyer.  Patrons can call and request or go online to the library’s website and place holds on materials.  Remember you are limited to five requests at a time.  When they are available, we will call and tell you to come and pick them up.  We are leaving the bags on the table for three days before we recycle materials.

Since one of our concerns was the safety of the library’s books and materials, we are quarantining everything returned for three days before they are checked in.  So, if you returned items in the drop box, they will not be removed from your screen for 72 hours.  Since we are not currently charging fines, it should not affect you, but if you are a heavy user of the WVDELI, you might want to return your books early since overdue books will block you on the DELI.  Most items automatically renew unless there is a hold on them, so just pay attention to best-sellers.

Also, we have resumed exchanging books and materials with Marion County Public Library and Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library.  If you place holds on their materials, please wait for a call, since they are delivered on Mondays and Thursdays, and are currently subject to quarantine at their libraries as well.

The library’s summer hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from noon until 8, and Tuesday and Thursday from noon until 5 p.m.  Staff will be here at 9 a.m. each morning and you can call after that to make requests, but you can only pick up materials during our open hours.  Also, if you make a request after 5 p.m., please wait until you receive a call to pick up your items.  It is very time consuming to gather books and other materials together to check out to you.

We are considering creating bags of books such as best-sellers, mysteries, beach reads, romance, young adult, etc. for those readers who don’t spend lots of time following the book world.  If you think that is a good idea, please let the staff know when you call or email.  We still are working out the logistics for something like that.

This is an entire new experience for libraries and we appreciate your patience.
