Off the Shelf: Music Lovers Welcome at the Library

By Sharon Saye on February 11, 2015 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The Grammy Awards were announced last weekend.  From the best in Hip Hop to Movie
Soundtrack winners, the range was tremendous.  With over 100 categories, these awards cover the gamut from the best in rock to the best in audiobooks.

The library has a huge collection of music both on CD and online.  Music lovers can browse through thousands of selections from the complete works of Mozart to the best of Miles Davis.  From the movie soundtrack of “Frozen” to the latest from artists as diverse as Taylor Swift and Tony Bennett both of whose works were nominated for Grammys, there are CDs for many music tastes.

And we add to the collection regularly; some of the newest selections include jazz vocalist, Diana Krall’s sampling of more modern songs such as “Alone Again” and “Desperado” on her February release, “Wallpaper,” as well as Bob Dylan’s surprising foray into the canon of Frank Sinatra in “Shadows in the Night.”

There is no way that the library could possibly keep up with the constant onslaught of new music across such a wide variety of genres, but with the library’s online service, Freegal, music lovers can download selections from over seven million songs covering the entire Sony catalog which includes artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Barbra Streisand.

Users can download three selections each week; all you need is your library card number.  Freegal resets every Monday night, so every week there are three more items for you to add to your musical collection.

Library users may not have access to every Grammy nominated song, but they still have the opportunity to sample across all types of music using Freegal.
