Off the Shelf: Oscar Worthy Films at the Bridgeport Public Library

The Academy Awards will be announced this coming Sunday and movie fans might want to take advantage of the library’s large DVD collection to catch up on many of the films that will be spotlighted on the awards show.
 
A few of the nominees have already been released and are available for checkout including the Best Picture nominees, “Arrival,” “Hell or High Water,” “Manchester by the Sea,” and “Hacksaw Ridge.”  Ruth Negga has been nominated for Best Actress for “Loving,” and Viggo Mortensen for “Captain Fantastic,” Meryl Streep earned another Best Actress nomination for “Florence Foster Jenkins.”  Best Animated Picture nominees “Kubo and the Two Strings and “Zootopia,” are now available.  In the technical categories, “Star Trek Beyond,” “Suicide Squad,” “Trolls,” “Hail, Caesar,” “Sully” and “Deepwater Horizon” can also be checked out now on DVD.
 
“Doctor Strange,” “Moonlight,” and “Allied” will be released on Feb. 28th followed the next week by “Jackie” from which Natalie Portman is nominated for Best Actress, and “Moana” nominated for Best Animated Film.  Isabelle Hubbert is nominated for Best Actress for “Elle” and Denzel Washington for Best Actor and Viola Davis for Best Supporting Actress are nominated for “Fences;” both are available on March 14th.  Dev Patel is nominated for Best Actor for “Lion” available on March 21st.              
 
Neither “La La Land” nor “Hidden Figures” have announced DVD release dates yet since they are still playing in theaters nationwide.  Other films that were nominated in various categories to look for in the next few months are: “Silence,” “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” “Rogue One,” and “20th Century Women.” 
 
Don’t forget that the library’s DVD collection numbers well over 5,000 titles including popular, children’s, classics, documentaries and television series that you can check out for two weeks.
