Off the Shelf: "Solar S'Mores" and So Much More

By Sharon Saye on August 06, 2014 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The summer reading programs ended last month.  Total enrollment for both children’s and adults was nearly 500, a tremendous participation.  The parties that ended each were very well attended with nearly 100.  I want to thank everyone who joined, helped out, did programs as well as all of our sponsors.  Special thanks to Amy Eakle and Sarah Nora who headed up the programs.

Summer is only half way over so this doesn’t mean that readers can stop reading.  Programs continue throughout the month.  Both adults and children are encouraged to participate in “Where in the World Did You Go?”  This program starts on August 5th and ends on August 29th.  Readers are given the chance to map out where they went in their “literary” travels as well as write a post card review of their recommended destinations to others in the community.

On August 6th, children will learn how to build and use a solar powered oven for baking s’mores in “Solar S’Mores.”  The program starts at 6 p.m. and is designed for children between the ages of 4 and 12.  Registration is required.

On Saturday, August 16th at 2 p.m. WBOY meteorologist Jason Parrish will present information about different weather patterns.  The program is designed for an audience of all ages and all are welcome.

“Wrap It Up!” will show children between the ages of 4 and 12 how to wrap their earbud cords using the design made popular by friendship bracelets.  Registration is required.  This program is scheduled for Thursday, August 28th at 6 p.m.

The teen group meets every Monday evening.  On August 11th, they will discuss the classic book by Lois Lowry, “The Giver,” on August 18th they will play “Clue,” and on August 31st they will engage in “Creative Writing.”  All programs are from 6-8 p.m.

Story Time continues every Friday at 10:30 a.m.  And the Contemporary Reading Group meets on August 20th at 4 p.m. to discuss the book, “Tisha” by Robert Specht about a teacher in rural Alaska.

“The Colorful Yarns” holds their regular meeting on August 26th at 6:30 p.m. to talk about fabric arts and share their creations.

August still offers ample opportunities for readers to participate in our programs.
