Off the Shelf: Summer Reading Programs Hit the Halfway Point

By Sharon Saye on June 24, 2015 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

It is hard to believe that the summer reading programs are almost at the half-way point.  The finale is on July 16th.  If you are interested you can still sign up and take part in the programs, and prizes.  Adults get a chance at a book bag filled with goodies like journals, cups, coloring books and pencils and, of course, books.  All you need to do is fill out an entry form when you take out books.  A winner is drawn every Monday.

Programs for adults include “Tea & Talk: Poldark” on Mondays at 12:30 p.m. in which viewers of the PBS Masterpiece Theater’s latest entry based on the “Poldark” books by Winston Graham can discuss each episode.  Tea will be provided and participants are welcome to bring a bag lunch.

The theme of this year’s Summer Reading is “Read to the Rhythm” and adults and children can enjoy local musician, Don Hamilton, as he teaches the basics of music.  Adults can “Learn to Read Music” with Don on Thursdays, July 2, 9, and 16 at 12:30 p.m.

Ballroom Dancing was such a hit in June that we scheduled another program on July 7th at 6 p.m.  Artie and Eileen Frank will teach beginners the basics.  Participants must pre-register, and they are recommended to come in pairs and wear comfortable shoes.

West Virginia author, Patricia Hopper Patteson will be available to sign her debut novel, “Kilpara,” on July 23 from 6-8 p.m.   The theme is the desire of Irish immigrants to return to the old country.  It takes place in northern Maryland and in Lough Corrib, Ireland in 1866.  Copies will be available for purchase during the event.

Book Talk continues on the third Wednesday of the month, July 15, at 4 p.m.; the selection for July is “The Dog Stars” by Peter Heller.  Anyone is welcome to join; just ask Joanne Kovalan for a copy of the book.  “Chapter Chat” is a second book group that meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m.  The July book is “In the Kingdom of Ice” by Hampton Sides.  Please ask Sarah Nora for a copy of the book.  Once again, the library encourages anyone interested to sign up for our book groups.

Children can still start the program; just register and receive a programming packet that includes recommended reads, reading log, independent activities and a calendar of events.  Summer reading programs are offered Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, Thursday evenings, and Friday afternoons.  You must be registered ahead of time for each program.
