Off the Shelf: "Take Me to Your Reader" Summer Reading Program

By Sharon Saye on May 18, 2016 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

With May already half over, it is time to turn our attention to June.  June is a big month at the library with the beginning of the summer reading program and the annual book sale.

Summer Reading registration begins Thursday, June 2nd.   There are three groups: children ages 4-12, teens ages 13-19 and adults ages 19 up.  Registered participants receive lists of recommended reads, reading logs, independent activities, and a calendar of Summer Reading Events.  Registration must be done in person at the library.

The theme this year is “Take me To Your Reader.”  The library is partnering with NASA to provide a series of programs in relation to our theme.  The purpose of a NASA Educator Resource center is to help teachers learn about and use NASA’s educational resources.  ERC’s provide in-service and pre-service training using NASA instructional products.  The kickoff event is June 9th at 2:00 p.m.  Participants will learn about rockets and launch paper rockets.  The target age group is 4-12.  Participants must first register for Summer Reading at the library.

There are a series of programs on everything from Remote Sensing and Dinosaurs as well as Echo the Bat on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Pre-registration is required.

There are a number of author signings and other programs during the month.  Please pick up a monthly calendar.  The calendar events are also listed on the library’s website.  Participants will receive all this in their packet.

The library has been holding a summer book sale during early June for decades.  This year the sale runs from Monday, June 6th through Saturday, June 11th.  The hours Monday through Friday are 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Saturdays, noon until 4:30 p.m.  Saturday is bag day, at $1.00 per bag.  The library provides the bags.

Prices are: hardbacks, $2.00, trade paperbacks, $1.50, puzzles, $2.00, paperbacks, $.50, children’s books, $.50, audio/video, $.25 and magazines, $.10.  The library is also accepting donations prior to and during the June sale.
