Off the Shelf: Using Library Resources for School Assignments

By Sharon Saye on August 19, 2015 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

It is hard to believe that school starts this week.  And unpleasant as it may be to remind students and parents, homework starts at the same time.  The library should be one of your regular stops to find information and books to do assignments.  With over 100,000 books and 106 magazines and 10 newspapers, the library has just what you need to meet your informational needs.

We certainly encourage students to visit the library and check out our physical books and materials, but we are well aware in this hectic world that stopping by is not always in the schedule.

So don’t forget the library’s online resources.  The WVDELI has nearly 30,000 eBooks and another 10,000 audiobooks to download including many classics used by teachers.  Zinio has over 100 magazines available for immediate download to your computer or device including many back issues.

The library also has nearly three dozen other services to provide assistance and resources. One is Mango languages with training for 63 languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Mandarin.  Another is Science Online which presents a broad range of scientific disciplines with extensive essays, videos, diagrams, definitions, biographies and experiments.  It is indexed by grade range, subject category and time required.  It is a great resource for science fairs.

U.S. Government Online offers an easy and engaging way to study the structure, function and history of the U. S. Government.  Focused and thorough in its coverage, this informative resource features an easy-to-navigate interface that allows users to find relevant essays, primary source documents, images and videos, tables, charts, and maps.

A to Z Maps Online is dedicated to providing reliable, up-to-date digital media essential for researchers, educators, travelers and professionals.

World Almanac and World Almanac Kids Online offers access for students and researchers to authoritative, essential statistics on hundreds of topics in a searchable online format.  This online resource puts the reference shelf staple at users’ fingertips with thousands of expertly organized facts.  The Kids version has subject area resources for elementary and middle-school level homework.

Worldcrunch and World News Digest brings a global perspective on world affairs with up-to-date news stories from around the planet and archival records on all major political, social, and economic events since November 1940.

And Writer’s Reference Center is a guide to the mechanics of writing and grammar to style and research.  It offers help building vocabulary and examples of good grammar and basic use.

The library offers access to these databases online
at www.bridgeportwv.com orwww2.youseemore.com/bridgeport/ with links and instructions for the various resources.  Also the library has a brochure listing all the databases with explanation and access instructions including passwords which we cannot publish online.  Please stop in and pick one up.
