After Successful Spring Youth Tennis Season, Bridgeport Parks & Rec/USTA Hosting Family Play Day

Having just concluded, Bridgeport Parks and Recreation’s spring youth tennis program included 20 regulars.

“That was actually the most we’ve ever had for the spring session,” said Kyle Hoffman of the U.S. Tennis Association, instructor. “And we have 17 already signed up with their parents for tomorrow’s event.”

Tomorrow’s event is a family tennis play day, designed for competitive play for kids and their parents.

The Play Day celebrates the end of the spring tennis season, but it is also open to those who did not participate. Kids will practice their skills against others on a similar level and learn the scoring process. Beginners are welcome.

“Kids can play with their parents. We’ll have it set up to where there are mini courts all over the place,” Hoffman said. “The idea is to get families out playing.”

For the cost of $10, an adult and child can participate. All proceeds will benefit the newly-formed Bridgeport Community Tennis Association.

“The money will be used toward future events or for kids who may not be able to afford (classes and camps),” Hoffman said. “We’re kicking around some other things, like possibly a group of kids going to a professional event later this summer. The money would be used to help offset costs and make it cheaper for everyone.”

A handful of parents have been active in the tennis association. The long-term mission includes the repair of some local tennis facilities, Hoffman said.
