Xtreme Science Camps Ready for Launch for Summer 2015

By Julie Perine on June 02, 2015 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

It’s been the consensus of local elementary students that summertime learning can be fun, especially if the learning is hands-on and the subject is extreme science.

The always popular Xtreme Science Camps are once again being offered through Bridgeport Parks and Recreation. Taught by Kellee Shuttleworth, Kay Burnette and Candy Belcastro, the sessions are open to students entering second through sixth grades. The first session – “CSI: Bridgeport” - will take place June 22-26 as students delve into a little virtual crime solving using the application of forensic science.

The second session – “Kitchen Chemistry” - will be held July 13-17 as classic experimentation takes a fresh, fun spin and campers observe resulting physical or chemical reactions. Projects completed in the past under the theme have included oxidizing steel wool, shining up pennies with a solution of vinegar and salt and the baking of “chemical apple pie” – ingredients including cream of tartar and Ritz Crackers.

The concept of Xtreme Science Camp has proven successful by providing young, eager minds with an up-close-and-personal approach to the science behind everyday objects and life.

Other recent camp curriculum has been built upon themes focusing on outer space, forensics, junior geology and ancient Egypt.

Shuttleworth, Burnette and Belcastro are all longtime teachers in Bridgeport schools. Annually, the trio chooses camp themes and fun activities to match. The criteria is for the camps to be interesting, engaging and, of course, kid friendly. Because the learning is hands-on, the kids are not just learning science; they’re doing science, Shuttleworth said.

“That’s how they learn the best,” she said. “You can’t teach science with a paper and pencil. You have to do it.”

Maximum enrollment is 50 students per camp. Class will be held 9 a.m.-noon at Benedum Civic Center. Some activities, particular the messier ones, will be held outdoors. The cost is $100 for each five-day camp. Parents can register children entering second through sixth grades at the Benedum Civic Center office. For more information, call 304-842-8240.
