After Suffering Pair of Losses, Lady Indians Beat Philip Barbour; Stand at 8-1-2 and Undefeated in Conference

Bridgeport High School's girls soccer team suffered their first two losses of the season this week after battling Charleston Catholic Saturday and Robert C. Byrd Monday.

In Monday night’s away contest with the Eagles, Bridgeport High School came up short 2-1.

“We had some good chances to score. We just didn’t capitalize on them,” said Coach John Reese. “It was just one of those nights that things didn’t fall for us. RCB is always a battle. It’s a nice team and it was a good game.”

Even though it was a loss on the books, Reese said his girls played well.

BHS Junior Lacy Bryant made the Lady Indians’ sole goal of the evening, a shot made about 30 yards out.

Reese said he also has been able to see what some of his underclassmen can do during the last few games.

Freshmen Emma Perine and Madison Ware and sophomore Kerstin George were starting forwards with senior Reagen Lesher – who was injured during Saturday’s game with Charleston Catholic – mixed in the rotation.

“Emma had a breakaway and Reagen had one that went wide,” he said. “They all had chances inside the box.”

Saturday’s away game against Charleston Catholic ended 3-1 in favor of the Irish. The Lady Indians played with a definite handicap.

“We lost three girls to injuries,” Reese said.

BHS freshman Madison Wilson suffered a hip injury and has been on crutches up until Tuesday. Anna Cava broke her nose when her opponent went to head the ball, missed it and made contact with Cava.  Lesher popped a hip out of place.

The Lady Indians were down 3-0 when Reese initiated the new forward strategy with Perine, Ware and Lesher.

“That’s when we scored,” he said.

That goal came from Perine, who scored off Ware.

“Those girls are looking good. They’re playing well and hustling,” Reese said.

Although a loss is never ideal, neither Saturday’s game with Charleston Catholic nor Monday’s game with RCB were conference games so the Lady Indians remain undefeated in the conference.

Going into Tuesday evening’s away contest with Philip Barbour, Reese said it would be a big game. But BHS broke its short losing streak, beating the Colts 3-2. Perine struck first, scoring her second goal of her varsity career. George followed suit, hitting the net next and senior Emily McCarthy scored the third goal.

The Lady Indians stand at 8-1-2.
