BHS Alums Helping Wounded Vets Find the Healing Power of Fishing

In 1992, the movie “A River Runs Through It” perfectly captured the power of fly-fishing.  It showed the transformative power of brothers bonding out in nature and how the beauty and quiet can help heal relationships and personal battles.  Locally, fly-fishing helps heal “brothers” as well.  BHS Alum Jason Manning has been working Program Lead for Project Healing Waters for over two years.

Project Healing Water Fly Fishing is a national program dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military personnel and veterans through fly-fishing and associated activities including education and outings.  The local organization, run out of the Clarksburg V.A. Hospital, is made up of volunteers who teach all aspects of fly-fishing.  “We teach fly tying, fly casting, rod building, and take the veterans on fishing trips,” says Manning.  “I am so grateful that I get to work with these guys.  Fly-fishing has always a passion of mine and to share it with these heroes is humbling.”

Project Healing Waters began in 2005 serving wounded military members at Walter Reed Medical Center.  All fly -fishing and tying equipment is provided to the participants at no cost and all trips are also free of charge.  The socialization and camaraderie of the classes is just as healing as the fishing itself.  It enables participants to empathize with one another and adapt their skills together.

Manning works with another BHS Alum, Chad Cooper, and recreational therapist Tom Perrine to offer classes at the V.A. Hospital.  “We have a waiting list of veterans and we are always looking for volunteers who enjoy working with great people and who have a passion for fly tying, casting and assisting with trips,” says Manning. The group recently traveled to the New River to fish for smallmouth bass.  “The experience itself was amazing and it was such an honor being with those who gave so much to make it possible.”
