BHS Baseball Team Captures Sectional Championship with 11-3 Victory Against University

The offense for the Bridgeport High School baseball team certainly has a lot going right in 2021. Perhaps the Indians' biggest strength when they are at bat though is the ability for a big inning to start at any point in the game and with any spot in the lineup.

On Saturday, it was the fourth inning where the Tribe, now 28-3, broke open a 3-all tie with eight runs en route to an 11-3 victory against University in the Class AAA Region I, Section 2 championship game.

BHS advances to the Region I championship where it will face Section 1 winner Morgantown in a best of three series. Regionals for baseball will begin the week of June 14.

The eight-run fourth inning was started by Chris Harbert drawing a one-out walk. Aiden Paulsen drove Harbert in with a single to make it 4-3.

A bunt single from Cam Cole and a walk by Frank Why loaded the bases. Ryan Goff ripped a single to left to make it 6-3. The bases were again loaded when Nate Paulsen was hit by a pitch.

J.D. Love drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 7-3. Drew Hogue hit a two-run single to make it 9-3. Anthony Dixon followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 10-3. The final run of the inning came when Cole reached on a two-out infield single.

"It's great that we can do that and any spot in the lineup can get a big hit for us," BHS coach Robert Shields said. "We also have a handful of guys that can come in off the bench and do it."

Ben McDougal improved to 7-0 on the mound as he gave up just three hits in five innings with 10 strikeouts. Cole pitched two shutout, hitless innings to close the door on the Hawks.

Cole, Goff and Dixon each had two hits for the Tribe. Noah Braham hit a solo home run for the Hawks. UHS scored a pair of runs in the second thanks to a bases loaded walk and a play where there was some miscommunication in the field on a steal attempt.

Nate Paulsen had an RBI single in the first and a pair of BHS runs were scored in the second on an error.

The win marked the 21st time this season BHS has scored at least 10 runs.
