BHS Baseball Team in Sectional Driver's Seat Following 13-6 Win Against University

The Bridgeport High School baseball team is in the Class AAA Region I, Section 2 driver’s seat following Wednesday’s 13-6 win against University in a winner’s bracket game.

It may not have been the crispest performance by the Indians, who improved to 27-3, but it was good enough to advance to the sectional championship game.

The Tribe will face either University or Buckhannon-Upshur for the sectional crown on Friday at BHS. The Hawks and Buccaneers are scheduled to meet in an elimination game Thursday.

The weather forecast doesn’t look great though for Thursday so if UHS and B-U are pushed back to Friday, the winner would head to Bridgeport on Saturday. Since the sectional is double elimination, whoever advances would have to beat the Tribe twice.

On Wednesday, the Indians trailed 2-0 before the bats got going in the third. After Frank Why scored on an error, J.D. Love crushed a two-run double to the gap in left-center to give his team the lead for good.

Four more runs came in the fourth. Aiden Paulsen hit an RBI triple, Ryan Goff had a two-run double and Nate Paulsen drove in a run with a single to make it 7-2.

Anthony Dixon hit a triple in the fifth and scored on wild pitch but the Hawks clawed back into it with three in the fifth and one in the six, cutting their deficit to 8-6.

Needing some insurance runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Love again delivered, this time hitting a two-run single. Dixon and Ben McDougal added sac flies and Aiden Paulsen scored on a wild pitch to make it 13-6.

Austin Mann closed things out in the seventh by setting the Hawks down in order for the first time in the game.

Mann pitched 2 1-3 strong innings in relief of Chris Harbert, who picked up the win. Harbert went 4 2-3 innings, scattering five hits and of his five runs allowed, only one was earned. He also struck out four and walked four.

Love finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, Nate Paulsen was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Goff also drove in two and went 2-for-4 with a par of doubles.

The 13 runs mark the 20th time out of 30 games this year, the Indians have scored at least 10 runs.
