BHS Boys Finish Second at Class AAA Region I Track and Field Meet, Girls Come in Third Place

The Bridgeport High School boys track and field team finished as the Class AAA Region I runner-up and the girls placed third at the regional championship meet Friday at Mylan Park.
 
Combined, the Indians earned automatic qualifying spots in 19 events for next week’s state meet at Laidley Field in Charleston and a handful of additional at-large bids.
 
The top three finishers from each of the four regions in each running event along with long jump, shot put and discus automatically qualify for states. Additionally, the next best four results regardless of region qualify for states. For high jump and pole vault, the top four from each region qualify in addition to any athlete that meets the automatic qualifying standard.
 
Giana Cox captured the regional championship in the 200 with a time of 26.21 and also qualified for the state meet as the runner-up in the 100 with a time of 12.51 and in the 400 with a time of 1:00.14.
 
Lyza Halterman qualified for the state meet with a runner-up finish in the shot put at 34-05.25 and a runner-up finish in the discus with a throw of 101-03.
 
The BHS girls picked up another runner-up finish in the high jump as Abigale Stewart cleared 5-02 in the high jump.
 
The team of Lee Ann Gaskins, Eliza Perine, Ava Hollen and Savannah Courtney qualified for states in the 4x200 with a third-place time of 1:51.81. The 4x400 team of Alea Matthis, Stewart, Gaskins and Delaney Dotson also placed third, finishing with a time of 4:12.99.
 
Myleigh Smell's fourth-place time of 16.61 in the 100 hurdles earned an at-large spot at states.
 
The team of Courtney, Gaskins, Perine and Carley Lattea qualified for an at-large spot in the 4x100 with a time of 52.62.
 
In other relay events for the BHS girls, the 4x800 team of Alea Matthis, Mikaela DeMoss, Sara Rexroad and Ashley McBrayer came in fifth with a time of 10:46.41. The shuttles team of Hollen, Myleigh Smell, Bria Smell and Jackson was fifth with a time of 1:10.13. Both earned at-large spots for Charleston.
 
For the BHS boys, Wes Brown won the regional championship in the shot put with a throw of 45-06.25.
 
Cale Culicerto finished second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.43 and was the runner-up in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.38. He was also part of the second-place shuttles team along with Cam Martin, Gabe Martin and Parker Blount that ran a 1:00.02.
 
Timmy Jeffress was third in the 100 with a time of 11.37, just edging teammate Donte Pierre’s fourth-place time of 11.38. 
The BHS duo also went 3-4 in the 200 with Jeffress finishing at 23.23 and Pierre at 23.59.
 
Pierre did however qualify automatically in the 4x200 along with Alex Moses, Jon Bender and Tanner Hathaway as they finished with a third-place time of 1:33.32.  The same four runners joined forces for a runner-up time in the 4x100 at 44.96.
 
The boyx 4x400 team is also going to states as Grayson Church, Moses, Jeffress and Quentin Collier ran a third-place time of 3:33.67.
 
The boys 4x800 team of Sam Dodson, Ethan Smell, Quentin Collier and William Northey earned a spot in Charleston with a third-place time of 8:26.34.
 
Noah Kintz was third in the pole vault, clearing 11-00.
 
Ryan Jones earned an at-large spot in the discus after a fifth-place throw of 136-09.
 
In other open running events for the BHS girls, Myleigh Smell was fourth in the 100 hurdles at 16.61 and sixth in the 300 hurdles at 50.83, Jackson was sixth with a time of 16.75 in the 100 hurdles, Courtney was sixth in the 100 at 13.36. Lattea was seventh in the 300 hurdles at 51.44.
 
In other field event results for the BHS girls, Isabella McCullough was fifth in the shot put at 29-07.25.
 
In other running events for the BHS boys, William Northey was fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 9:54.41, Grayson Church was eighth in the 400 with a time of 54.19, Cam Martin was fourth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.39, Dodson was sixth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:47.54 and eighth in the 800 at 2:03.98, Aiden Gorby was seventh in the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.38,
 
In other field event results for the BHS boys, Jones was sixth in the shot put at 41-11.50, Aiden Gorby was fourth in the long jump at 19-09.50, Gabe Martin was seventh in the long jump at 19-05.25, Patrick Aucremanne was sixth in the pole vault at 8-06, Parker Blount was sixth in the high jump at 5-08 and Ian Blount was seventh in the high jump at 5-06.
 
Morgantown swept the team titles at the regional. University was the runner-up on the girls side.
