Bridgeport High School boys and girls pulled out a third place finish in Saturday’s 2017 Penguin Invitational held at Parkersburg High School.

In boys’ rankings, the host school earned the top spot with Wheeling Park High School coming in second. For the girls, Wheeling Park was No. 1 with Parkersburg High placing second.

Other schools participating in the meet were Buckhannon-Upshur, Parkersburg South, Huntington, Philip Barbour, Robert C. Byrd, Liberty, Lincoln and Point Pleasant.

Despite their favorable finish, BHS produced just two first-place wins, both for Sarah Stallman. The sophomore standout – who has been recovering from illness – finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:05.14.

“That is my best time I’ve had, but I would like to do even better,” she said.

Stallman’s other first place – in the 100-yard breaststroke – was a very close one. Competitor Lydia Bisch of Wheeling Park was second with a time of 1:16.69, trailing just .46 of a second to Stallman.

“I took a chance swimming the breaststroke because I knew I was going to be in the first heat and with the fastest people and didn’t know how well I would do in the best heat,” she said.

Stallman was quite happy about the race and she is very pleased with her team.

“Right now, I think our team is doing pretty good,” she said. “We may not be winning, but we are getting better times and having fun and that’s really all that matters to me. I was happy with all of my team mates. I watched some of the events and I was happy with my friends and how far they have come through the season.”

Other key races for the Lady Indians included the 200-yard medley relay in which the team of Stallman, Megan Lehosit, Jenna Soltesz and Catie Wilson earned a second place finish.
