For the first time in five years, the Bridgeport junior varsity football team captured a victory against Class AAA Morgantown.  On Monday, the Indians took a come-from-behind 12-9 win at Wayne Jamison Field.

Both the Indians and the Mohigans started off sluggish offensively. Bridgeport’s first two drives started off strong, but both ended with punts. The second punt by the Indians ended with Nick Muller on his back for a few moments from a monstrous hit that would keep him sidelined for the remainder of the game.

With a minute left to go in the second quarter, Morgantown decided to get on the board using its field goal unit. The Mohigans went into the locker room with a 3-0 score at the half.

Coming out after the break, the Indians would receive the ball starting their drive on their own 28-yard line. The Indians decided to go back to the old fashioned stick-I offense this and became more successful. After moving the ball down field and entering the red zone, Haden Miller fumbled on the six, and Morgantown gained possession.

The next drive by the Indians ended in a redeeming 22-yard touchdown run from Miller. The Mohigans then quickly responded with their own 45-yard run for a score. The extra point was blocked by junior Dalton Elliot. Going into the final five minutes the Mohigans led 9-6.

With the clock showing just over a minute to play, Gordon Swiger connected with Andrew Barker for a 26-yard touchdown pass. The Indians were unsuccessful on their two point conversion making the score 12-9.

“When coach called my number all that I was thinking was to not drop it,” said Barker.

Morgantown was left unsuccessful in the last seconds of the game after a sack from senior Jonathon Murray and two incomplete passes.

“It felt good to make such a crucial play towards the end of the game to ensure we had all the momentum,” said Murray

The junior varsity team will be back in action on a road trip to Buckhannon on Monday, Sept. 1 – Labor Day.
