BHS Standout, Future Georgia Southern University Golfer Mason Williams Claims Third Consecutive West Virginia Junior Match Play Championship

The weekend of May 12-13, Bridgeport High School senior Mason Williams captured the win in the 18th West Virginia Junior Match Play Championship at Parkersburg Country Club.
The Indian standout and future member of the Georgia Southern University golf team had also won the 16th and 17th annual events. He made tournament history after his back-to-back victories in 2016 and 2017. A third consecutive win puts him in the record books once again.
The tournament features a par 73 layout with four separate one-on-one matches. Williams faced Christian McKisic of Buckhannon-Upshur in the championship match, passing the lead back and forth and going 21 holes.
Williams said the Junior Match Play is always a challenge in that it’s the first competition of the summer season. Only qualified golfers age 18 and under participate.
“There are two qualifiers throughout the state and the top eight golfers from each of those qualifiers get in,” Williams said.
This year was his final West Virginia Junior Match Play Championship and as the summer progresses, he will play several other youth events for the final time.
Williams’ next competition is the West Virginia Amateur Championship, to be held June 4-7 at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs. He will be joined by BHS golf teammate Matt Aman, who has also qualified for the event.
Throughout the summer, competition will take Williams to states including Lousiana, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, among potential others.
On Aug. 10, he will move in at Georgia Southern University and immediately start practicing with the Eagle golf team.
