BHS Tennis Completes First Week of Action with Pair of Wins for Girls; Split Matches for the Boys

The Bridgeport High School tennis season got under way last week with matches against Parkersburg Catholic and Braxton County. For the Lady Indians, it was a pair of wins. The boys split the week with one victory and one loss.
 
The opener was March 22 in Parkersburg.
 
“The boys lost 0-7 to a very good Parkersburg Catholic,” said Coach Dan Oliveto. “And the girls beat a very good team 5-2.”
 
Taylor Abraham lost in singles and she and Anna Wilfong lost their doubles match as well.
 
“All other girls picked up their first wins of the season,” Oliveto said.
 
Wilfong won 8-4 in line two singles; Olivia Rush won 8-6 in line three singles and Rachel Lamm won 8-4 in line four singles. Teams which won in doubles action were Olivia Rush and Eleanor Noone, 8-2 in line two doubles and Caroline Furby and Ashton Miller 8-3 in line three doubles.
 
The boys’ side wasn’t as successful, but Oliveto said he saw some hustle and effort which are a definite plus for the season.
 
“The boys’ scores were closer than it looks. They competed hard and I was excited to see that from all the new players,” he said.
 
Grant Duvall lost 1-8 in line one singles and Andrew Barlow lost 2-8 in line two singles. Also falling in singles play were Ben Holbert and Brent Sinsel. Duvall and Holbert teamed up in doubles play, getting shut out 0-8. Barlow and Tanner Cava also lost in doubles play; Parkersburg Catholic outscoring them 8-1.
 
At their first home match, held March 24 at Bridgeport Country Club, the Indians saw more successful matches against Braxton County. Duvall lost 2-8 in line one singles, but the rest of the sets were wins. Barlow won 8-2 in line two, Holbert won 8-3 in line three and Sinsel won 8-3 in line four. In doubles play, Duvall and Holbert won 8-4 in line one, Barlow and Cava won 8-3 in line two and Sinsel and Antonio Spatafore won 8-2 in line three.
 
Lady Indians’ action included three shut outs by Abraham, 8-0 in line one singles; Wilfong, 8-0 in line two singles and Rush, 8-0 in line three singles. Lamm also won, outscoring her Braxton County opponent 8-2 in line four singles. In doubles, Abraham and Wilfong won 8-0 in line one, Noone and Rush won 8-2 in line two and Furby and Miller won 8-0 in line three.
 
The girls enter this week’s play with a 2-0 record and the boys 1-1. The Tribe travels to Fairmont Senior today and on Tuesday, takes on Robert C. Byrd at at Bridgeport Country Club. Thursday rounds out the week’s action as the Indians play Liberty High School at Clarksburg’s Veterans Park. All matches begin at 4:30 p.m.
