BHS Volleyball Team Brings Record of 19-7 Into Week

Despite not being able to play for two weeks because of Harrison County’s orange level on the West Virginia Department of Education School Alert Map, the Bridgeport High School volleyball team showed little signs of rust upon its return to the court.
 
The Indians improved to 19-7 overall, winning five of six matches last week.
 
It all started in a home tri-match where BHS picked up wins against Robert C. Byrd and fellow Class AAA Region I, Section 2 foe University.
 
The Indians took care of the Eagles in straight sets, 25-20 and 25-20. The team’s three primary outside hitters, Shea Hefner, Alexa Martin and Violet Sickles, combined for 20 kills. Hefner led the way with 10, while Martin had seven and Sickles three.
 
Hefner also had 10 digs, three aces and a block. Martin added two digs, two aces and two blocks. Sickles finished with one assist and one dig.
 
Jayce Lucas paced the Indians with 20 assists, while also serving two aces.
 
Addie Phillips gave the Tribe a fourth player with at least two aces with two of her own. Gracie Backus chipped in with one kill and one block. Cambria Freeman also had a kill to go along with three digs.
 
Against the Hawks, BHS took care of business with 25-10 and 25-13 victories.
 
Hefner led the way with eight kills, six digs, six aces and one assist.
 
Sickles and Martin each finished with four kills against UHS. Martin added four aces and a block, while Sickles added one dig.
Lucas finished with 14 assists, three aces, two digs and one kill. Backus had a pair of kills, Freeman had two digs and one ace. Julia Griffith had two digs and Amber Jones had one assist.
 
The Indians picked up their 17th win of the season with a three-set victory against Frankfort with scores of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-20.
Hefner and Sickles each reach double digits in kills with 17 and 11, respectively. Hefner also had seven digs and two aces, while Sickles added four aces, one dig and one block.
 
Martin finished with four kills, two blocks, one assist, one dig and one ace.
 
Lucas posted 30 assists and served three aces.
 
Backus added two kills to go along with one assist and one block. Griffith and Phillips each added a kill. Griffith also had four digs, three aces and an assist. Freeman chipped in with one dig and one assist.
 
The Tribe hit the road for a quad match at Winfield that in addition to the host Generals, featured Spring Valley and Cabell Midland.
Winfield topped BHS 25-18 and 25-23 in Match 1.
 
Martin had a team-high 10 kills along with three digs and three blocks. Henfer posted six kills, 10 digs, three assists and one ace. Sickle finished with four kills, five digs and two assists.
 
Lucas again led the way in assists with 14 and added eight digs and one kill. Phillips came away with three blocks and had one assist, one dig and one ace. Freeman had three digs and one assist.
 
The Indians rebounded with a three-game victory against Spring Valley. They took Game 1 25-13, the Timberwolves scratched out a 30-28 win in Game 2. BHS secured the win with a 25-15 win in Game 3.
 
Hefner sent down 16 kills and added 11 digs, three aces and one assist. Sickles and Martin chipped in with 10 and eight kills, respectively. Sickles also had two digs, one assist and one ace. Martin added two blocks, one dig and one ace.
 
Lucas had 32 assists, three aces and three digs. Phillips finished with three kills, three aces, one assist and one dig. Freeman posted three digs and an assist. Backus provided one kill.
 
The Indians closed out the quad match with a 25-15, 26-24 victory against Cabell Midland.
 
Hefner just missed a second straight double-double, with 19 kills and nine digs. She also had one assist.
 
Sickles had seven kills, five digs, one ace and one block. Martin finished with two kills, two blocks, two digs, one assist and one ace.
Lucas posted 24 assists, five digs, one kill and one ace. Freeman put up five digs and two assists. Phillips added one kills, one dig and two aces. Backus had one kill, one assist and one block.
 
The next scheduled match for the Indians is a home match on Wednesday against Morgantown. That will be followed by a tri-match on Thursday at Lewis County that is also set to feature Preston.
