BHS Volleyball Team Wins 4 of 5 to Improve to 8-3

The Bridgeport High School volleyball team had a busy yet successful week, winning four of five matches to run its overall record to 8-3.
 
The Indians swept a tri-match on the road at Buckhannon-Upshur by defeating Grafton in straight sets, 25-13 and 25-19 and the Buccaneers in straight sets, 25-15 and 25-10.
 
All-stater and WVU recruit Shea Hefner had yet another standout all-around effort with nine kills, four assists, five digs and three aces against the Bearcats.
 
Alexa Martin added six kills, while Violet Sickles and Jayce Lucas had three and two kills, respectively.  Lucas also had a team-high 14 assists. Cambria Freeman and Julia Griffith each provided three digs, Freeman added three assists. Addie Phillips and Grace Backus each had a block.
 
Against B-U, Hefner led the way with 12 kills to go along with a pair of assists, six digs and six aces. Martin was also a force at the net with nine kills and three blocks.
 
Sickles added six kills, two digs and four aces. Lucas finished with 25 aces. Amber Jones had two kills, while Freeman and Griffith had three digs apiece.
 
Freeman also served up one ace. Phillips again had a block.
 
The Indians had the opportunity to get an early look at a Class AAA Region I foe last week as Brooke visited BHS.
 
The Tribe took the first two games, 25-23 and 25-21 before the Bruins came back with a 25-21 win in Game 3. BHS secured the victory by taking the fourth set, 25-19.
 
Hefner was all over the place again with 17 kills, three assists, 13 digs and seven aces.
 
Sickles and Martin finished with eight and six kills, respectively. Lucas, Phillips, Jones and Freeman all had one kill.
 
Lucas had 29 assists and Martin chipped in with one.
 
Griffith came up with eight digs. Freeman added seven digs, while Lucas and Sickles each had two.
 
The Indians were strong in the service game against Brooke with 26 total aces. In addition to the seven by Hefner, Lucas had six, Freeman had five, Griffith finished with four and Lucas and Martin each had two.
 
Sickles also had two blocks and Lucas had one.
 
Bridgeport wrapped up the week in a tri-match at Greenbrier East that also featured PikeView.
 
First up was PikeView, which BHS defeated 25-9 and 25-14.
Hefner again led the way with 10 kills, six digs and four aces.
 
Sickles added five kills, Martin had two and Lucas, Phillips, Backus, Freeman and Joslynn Kirch all had one kill.
 
Lucas put up 19 assists and Grffith added two to go along with six digs. Freeman also had two digs.
 
Lucas also served four aces, Martin had two aces, Kirch and Freeman each had one.
 
Martin had two blocks and Backus had one.
 
The match with Greenbrier East went three games. The Spartans won the first one, 25-15, the Indians took the second, 25-23, and East secured the win with a 25-21 victory in Game 3.
 
Hefner had 10 kills, 11 digs and a block.
 
Martin posted nine kills and seven blocks. Sickles added six kills, two digs and a block.
 
Lucas had a team-best 25 assists, one kill, one dig and the Tribe’s lone ace of the match.
 
Backus also had a kill, while Freeman and Griffith added eight and seven digs, respectively.
 
The Indians will be at home for four consecutive matches, beginning tonight with a tri-match against Preston and North Marion.
 
On Tuesday, Parkersburg visits BHS. Hedgesville is scheduled to be at BHS Sept. 25 and then the Indians face B-U again on Sept. 29.
