SUBMITTED BY BMS CHEER COACHING STAFF:

The Bridgeport Middle School Cheerleaders participated in the Jan. 30 Punky Garrett Cheer Classic held at Robert C. Byrd High School.

In the jump competition, the Lady Braves’ Jade Nguyen placed first in the sixth grade division and Addison Boggs placed first in the eighth grade division.

Out of 15 teams, a group of BMS cheerleaders placed second out of 15 in the stunt group competition. That stunt group was comprised of Lilly Strait, Sophia Gorby, Addison Boggs, Lauran Johnston and Abbie Alfred. Nabbing fifth place was Gyllian Wagner, Emilia Underwood, Lindsey Suter, Jade Nguyen and Amelia Duarte. Stunt groups compete individually and perform continuous stunts to music for up to one minute.

Outstanding Cheerleader awards went to Lindsey Suter, Addison Boggs and Sophia Gorby.

Other competing members of the BMS cheer team were Alyson Gibson, Rylee Mullins, Kylie Dowell, Sofia Henline, Jordanne Wiltz and Bella Spatafore.

With all members participating, the team placed second in the large division for Open Routine and Technical Cheer.

“This was such a great experience for all members of the team to be able to compete because we did not have to have alternates and we competed against some very talented teams,” said Coach Natalie Hathaway. “Even with mistakes in our routine, we finished second competing against teams that had as many as four more girls than we did.”

Hathaway said she and Assistant Coach Janet Hathaway are very proud of how their girls have improved over the course of the 2015-16 school year.

“And they had an absolute blast Saturday - which is what is most important to us,” Natalie Hathaway said.

The BMS cheerleaders are back in competitive action Feb. 20 as they participate in the East Fairmont Cheer Classic at East Fairmont High School.

“We would love for everyone to come out and cheer the girls on,” Hathaway said.

Doors open at 9 a.m. with competition starting at 10 a.m.
