SUBMITTED TO CONNECT-BRIDGEPORT BY BRIDGEPORT MIDDLE SCHOOL COACHING STAFF

Bridgeport Middle School was originally scheduled to travel to and play South Harrison on April 6 in softball. However, that game was postponed due to inclement weather.

SHMS and BMS then agreed to reschedule the game as part of a doubleheader to be played at the Bridgeport Softball Field.  The rescheduled date was Wednesday and Bridgeport swept the doubleheader.

In the first game, SHMS was the home team.

In their first at bat, the Lady Braves scored 14 runs and sent 19 batters to the plate.  In the second inning, BMS tacked on an additional six runs. Key hits in the second inning came from Makenna Smith and Makanzie Earp to take a 20-0 lead.

The Lady Hawks scored twice in the bottom of the second as a result of a BMS outfield error, a SHMS triple, and a wild pitch.  Bridgeport was now ahead by the score of 20-2.

The Lady Braves added on 10 additional runs in the third inning to close out their scoring.  Singles by Earp and Rachel Mason and a triple by Ashley Hart were key to the scoring.

BMS starting pitcher, Johnna Hull, held the Lady Hawks scoreless in their half of the third inning and end the game with a 30-2 mercy rule win.  The win improved Hull’s pitching record to 4-0 on the season.  In her three innings of work, Hull surrendered two runs on two hits and struck out five.

In the second game of the doubleheader, BMS was the home team.  Cheyenne Martin was the starting pitcher for Bridgeport.  She pitched a complete game shutout for the win and see her pitching record go to 4-0 on the 2017 season.  Her pitching line read no runs, no hits, three walks, and four strikeouts.

Maci Cook started the BMS bottom of the first with a walk and that was followed by a single from Sydney Snyder. Paige Humble reached on a SHMS outfield error that brought home Cook. Katie Via then hit into force out at second with Snyder scoring on the play. Martin, Corinne Lalama, and Earp each followed with walks, with Via scoring on the Earp walk. All came around to score on a series of SHMS wild pitches. After an inning, BMS was up 6-0.

In the second, Humble tripled with one out. Via brought her home with a single and then stole second base.  Hull, pinch hitting for Lalama, singled to bring home Via. Earp singled and that advanced Hull to third, who later scored on wild pitch.  The Lady Braves now had a 9-0 lead.

BMS, with one out in the third inning, saw Cook work out a walk, and steal second. The next batter, Molli Enfield, was also walked. Humble singled home Cook with the Lady Braves 10th run and a three-inning mercy rule victory.

The win saw the Lady Braves improve their season record to 8-0.

The Lady Braves return to action on Monday when they host Ritchie County Middle School at the Bridgeport Softball Field.  Game time is set for 5 p.m.
