Buckhannon-Upshur defeated Bridgeport, 6-2, Monday in a Class AAA Region I, Section 2 semifinal game.

Ryan Hurst had a hat trick for the Buccaneers (7-5-1) who advance to face top-seeded University on Wednesday for the sectional title.

Kyle McCarthy and Zane Wagner had goals for the Indians who finish the season at 6-4-1.

McCarthy gave the Tribe an early 1-0 lead as he scored off a pass from Paul Hong.

Hurst scored his first goal just a few minutes later to tie it a 1. B-U tacked on a goal later in the first half with an assist from Bridgeport as a corner kick went off the head of an Indians’ defender head and found the back of the net for an own goal.

Caden Andrick put the Buccaneers up 3-1. Hurst followed with two more goals, the second of which came on a penalty kick. B-U’s final goal came from Zach Calef-Boring, making it 6-1.

Wagner’s goal closed out the scoring in the contest.

“We had a couple of great opportunities to score in the second half,” BHS coach Keith Dumas said. “We had a couple of chances right in the box. Then they came down and scored a couple.

“I’m proud of our kids. We didn’t play for three weeks and I think that really hurt our momentum. Not to take anything away from them because they were facing the same situation. But we were playing really well before those three weeks.”
