The pairings are set for the Class AA Region 2, Section 1 basketball tournament. Robert C. Byrd has earned the top seed in the section, while Bridgeport is the second seed.

 

Lincoln is the third seed and the Cougars are followed by fourth-seeded Elkins and fifth-seeded Liberty. Action will begin Saturday.

 

Liberty will visit Elkins on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. with the winner of that contest playing at Robert C. Byrd at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Bridgeport will play host to Lincoln in the opening round sectional game. The Tuesday game will begin at 7 p.m.

 

Teams that lose in the opening round games are eliminated from the postseason. The winners of the Bridgeport game with Lincoln and the Robert C. Byrd contest against either Liberty or Elkins will square off on the home floor of the highest remaining seed Friday at 7 p.m.

 

Bridgeport has not fared well this year against RCB and Lincoln. In fact, the two schools have given the Indians three of their five losses during what was a 16-5 season heading into last night’s game with Fairmont Senior. 

 

Tuesday’s opponent, Lincoln, beat Bridgeport earlier this year in Shinnston. The Tribe lost a double-digit halftime advantage and fell to the Cougars by a 54-51 score. The goal is to get the win versus Lincoln to move into a double elimination format against what is favored to be an RCB team that has beaten BHS by scores of 42-34 and 53-45. However, Liberty and Elkins will have a say in whether the Indians or Cougars play the Eagles.

 

If the Tribe can beat Lincoln, they will have at least two more games. The winner of this section will play host to the loser of the Region II, Section 2 championship game. The loser of this section will visit the winner of Section 2 the following week.

 

The opposite side of the section features Braxton County, Clay County, Lewis County, Nicholas County, Roane County and Herbert Hoover.
